Superintendent Lyon Accepts Position at Palm Springs USD

Superintendent Sandra Lyon, who has served as superintendent of the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District since 2011, announced her plans to leave SMMUSD for the superintendent position of the Palm Springs Unified School District, effective July 1, 2016. Read More >


Santa Monica and Malibu named a Best Community for Music
The Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District has been honored with the "Best Communities for Music Education" designation from the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) Foundation for its outstanding commitment to music education. SMMUSD joins 475 districts across the country in receiving the prestigious award in 2016, and is one of only two districts in Los Angeles County to be recognized. Read More >

Malibu High School Field Lighting Approval Stands Following Appeal Ruling

Ending nearly four years of litigation, the Court of Appeal denied the appellants’ challenge to the permitting for the Malibu High School athletic field lights, in a decision rendered yesterday. Malibu High School’s football, soccer and lacrosse teams may continue to hold evening practices and games under the field lights. Read more >

Malibu High Earns Gold Medal, Santa Monica High Awarded Silver Medal in 2016 U.S. News & World Report Ranking

U.S. News and World Report has ranked Malibu and Santa Monica high schools in the top 120 schools in California, with rankings of 53 and 112, respectively, both in higher position from last year. U.S. News rankings are determined by college readiness scores, based on demographics, state test scores and college prep exams. Both SMMUSD high schools ranked in the top 700 nationally. The publication surveyed nearly 20,000 public high schools nationwide for its 2016 Best High Schools list and released its findings this week. Nationally, Malibu High ranked 351; Santa Monica ranked 692. Read more >

California Coastal Commission Approves Coastal Development Permit for the Malibu High School Campus Project

The approved MHS Campus Project includes state-of-the-art lighting and a parking lot management plan that the Malibu Community Alliance and SMMUSD agreed upon allowing construction to commence this summer.

The California Coastal Commission unanimously approved the proposed coastal development permit for the Malibu High School Campus Project last week at a meeting held in Santa Rosa. The meeting was attended by representatives for the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District and the Malibu Community Alliance. Read more >


Presentation by Pedro A. Noguera, Ph.D. & Associates to Board of Education, April 7, 2016
Dr. Pedro Noguera’s report on the current state of equity and opportunities to learn in SMMUSD, including findings and recommendations, was presented at a special board meeting held in the Samohi cafeteria on April 7, 2016. More than 220 parents, community members, district staff, administrators, and City of Santa Monica officials attended and expressed appreciation to the board and district leadership for prioritizing this issue.

Santa Monica College is offering FREE college classes for high school students! Get a head start on classes to graduate high school or take classes to prepare for college. There are hundreds of classes to choose from, including biology, history, math, Spanish, chemistry, music and more! Enrollment begins May 23 for high school students. Summer Classes begin June 20. SMMUSD Summer Adventure

SUMMER ADVENTURE PROGRAM - Educational Fun for Local Students!

Registration is now open for this fun and affordable summer enrichment program co-sponsored by the Santa Monica-Malibu Education Foundation (SMMEF) and Santa Monica-Malibu Council of PTAs. The program, with sessions in Santa Monica and Malibu, is open to incoming kindergarten through eighth-grade students, and runs for five weeks from June 20 through July 22. There are classes for everyone including cooking, theater, dance, French, rock climbing and more!

Measure R Parcel Tax General Information and Senior Exemption Application

In accordance with the Senior Exemption provision of the Measure R Parcel Tax, the 2016 - 17 forms are being mailed and are due to be returned/postmarked by June 30, 2016.
To qualify for the Measure R Senior Exemption in 2016 - 17, senior citizens must be age 65 by June 30th of the year the application is made; own and occupy the property as their principal place of residence; and, annually apply for the exemption by the application deadline of each year. Read more >
