SMMUSD Welcomes New Employees
The Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District would like to extend a warm welcome to the following new employees:

John Muir Elementary - Paula Lytz was appointed as the new principal of John Muir Elementary School on September 17, 2015. Ms. Lytz brings 19 years of education experience to this position. Before moving on to Muir, she was the assistant principal at Lincoln Middle School. “I am so excited to be joining the close-knit community at John Muir Elementary, and I am eager to get to know the children, staff, and parents,” Lytz said.

Director of Food Services - Our new Director of Food Services is Elizabeth Powell. Ms. Powell brings 32 years of experience to this position. Before coming to SMMUSD, she was employed in Santa Maria, Ventura, and Los Angeles, and was most recently coordinator of the food service warehouse for the Santa Maria-Bonita School District. "I'm very excited and honored to be here to help the great staff we already have make this program even better!" Powell said.

Director of Classified Personnel - New Director of Classified Personnel Michael Cool is tasked with overseeing the recruitment and hiring of classified personnel for SMMUSD. Before coming to our district, he worked for Santa Monica College, Bassett Unified School District, Inglewood Unified School District and the Ventura Community College District. “I am very excited to take on the role of director of classified personnel here at SMMUSD,” Cool said.

SMMUSD Water Conservation Efforts

We at SMMUSD are extremely concerned about the drought in California and the water shortage facing our state. We want our community to know SMMUSD is doing its part in conserving water in line with mandatory water reduction measures announced by state officials in May 2015. In fact, SMMUSD began water conservation efforts last year.

Water Saving Measures
We have introduced multiple water saving measures including evaluating landscaping as well as managing and replacing hardware and systems.

We are planting drought tolerant plants; watering less frequently; replacing leaky and automatic faucets with efficient units; and beginning an initiative to install rain barrels to capture rain runoff for irrigation use.

These water conservation measures were established voluntarily prior to the recent mandate and we continue to look for other ways to conserve even more.

Help Us Conserve
Please help us do our share by reporting any watering concerns on our campuses so we may address them immediately. Please email:
